This is the largest digital organ owned by the LDS Church. The console boasts a first-of-it's-kind 27-channel fiber optic audio transport system that feeds into the organ's own sound system, the house reinforcement system, and the broadcast audio channels for television and radio.
To get the live sound into the massive 15,000-seat auditorium, the organ has a 72-speaker array spanning the width of the entire stage which is sectioned into divisions for Great, Swell, and Choir in order to give the organ the polyphony you expect to hear from a pipe organ. The organ also utilizes 12 18-inch subwoofers located underneath the stage that deliver extremely powerful bass response down to 8hz. During installation, the builders needed to turn down the volume on the subwoofers because the 64' Gravissima was vibrating too much of the auditorium's structure. |
Built primarily as an accompaniment instrument for various church and university meetings, the organ can easily stand on it's own as a very fine performance instrument due to its extensive variety of sounds.
The console also has special provisions to accommodate an organist during a live television or radio broadcast scenario. These provisions include CC television monitors, a digital countdown clock, and a special headset for communication between the organist and the program director during the actual broadcast. The organ can also be easily moved to and played from any location on the enormous stage (or off stage) in order to accommodate any special stage configurations for meetings or performances. |
